In this 8-week online course, students learn the basics of sketch comedy writing for the stage while working on developing, strengthening, and trusting their comedic instincts. Topics include character creation, point of view, story, audience, tension, stakes, the 5-point structure, and more. Students are assigned various in-class writing assignments and provided sample sketches written by Second City (Chicago) Alumni, which will be read and analyzed in class. Beginning Week 4, students are required to write one 5-page sketch/week based on a specific “sketch pattern.” Sketch patterns include: Classic Relationship Sketch, Clash of Context, Fish out of Water, and Inappropriate Response. These sketches will be read aloud in class and discussed among students in a workshop-style critique.
